The strings are braided steel cable (1/16").  I tried it first with .125 music wire, but it was too stiff to work with and the tension required to tune them would have bent the frame. The cables give a better fundamental with fewer partials.  Setting the pickup in the middle reinforces the fundamental and makes it playable from both sides.  The pedals are pitchbenders so the pair of strings can play m3rds M3rds and 4ths.
