LES FRERES BASCHET

The Baschet Brothers (makers of Les Structures Sonores) defined four elements of musical instruments.
Every instrument is a combination of at least three of them.
1. a means of producing periodic vibrations
a string, a bar, a membrane, a column of air
2. a means of creating and maintaining the vibrations
a bow, finger, hammer, or pick, a hammer, a stick or hand, breath or bellows
3. a means of playing a scale and controlling the pitch
a fingerboard or bridge, a bridge or set of bars, a tensioning mechanism, holes or set of tubes
4. a means of amplifying the sound. A resonator (sound box) or radiator
(soundboard) or both. (Wind instruments don’t require amplification.)
